Psalm 51:10, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” (ESV)

Growing up in my house, we always did a spring cleaning day. I love organization, I love cleaning out my closets and making everything look neat and new. I remember my mom would go through the whole house and clean. I loved the sparkly clean feeling! We clean our physical houses during the spring and all year round, but we also need to clean our spiritual houses. Sometimes we need spiritual refreshment. We accumulate dirt on our spiritual walls and floors. Many times we need to stop, clean our houses inside and out to be able to offer our bodies as “a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God.” (Romans 12:1)
To do this spiritual cleanse, we must evaluate and ask ourselves, “What steps should we take along with the Holy Spirit to clean our spiritual home?” Only you know what areas need work in your life. Evaluate what you say, what you do and what you think (Colossians 3:17). Sometimes we need to take the trash out. Are there things in your life that are taking up too much space? There may be things in your life that are distracting you from serving God. If there is, follow the directions in Philippians 4:8 that says, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” And finally, we need to collect our cleaning supplies. When you clean a house, you need a mop, a broom, scrubbers for the bathtub and more. For your spiritual home, you only need one thing – the Word of God. It is your multipurpose cleaner (Hebrews 4:12).

This spring, as you clean out your house, I encourage you to think about the things in your life that are not of God. I encourage you to refresh your relationship with the Lord as you walk by the Spirit.
